Lost Horse Mine produced over 10,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 ounces of silver between 1894 and 1931. As per the NPS JOTR website, "When the story of the Lost Horse Mine is told, it sounds like a western campfire tale: gun slinging cowboys, cattle rustlers, horse thieves, the lure of gold, and a sticky-fingered miner."

Remembering the last time that I visited Barker Dam, and there was actually some water in the dam. Not much. But enough to reflect the granite rock pile and trees beyond the water.

I enjoyed the peace and solitude of being at Inspiration Peak to enjoy the sunset.

Joshua Trees always make me think of Dr. Seuss cartoon characters. Each of them very different, with their own unique characteristics. This one looks (to me) like it's about to walk off toward the left of the frame.

This dwarf juniper is usually paired with a large rock monolith (aka Penguin Rock). I like this composition that shows the tree in its own, set against a sunrise sky.

Wispy clouds, light pollution, a passing car's headlights, and a sky full of stars come together. I'd love to claim that this was planned, but it wasn't. Just happenstance.

There are some great 4WD trails in Joshua Tree National Park. Please ensure you're well prepared before you venture out and preferably travel with other 4WDs. The trails are not maintained or patrolled. If you'd like to go on a 4WD tour, I highly recommend https://joshuatree-offroad.com

I'm looking forward to the start of dark sky photography season (April-October). One of the things I like to do to surprise my workshop participants is to make them hot chocolate while we're out in the field. It tastes so good - particularly early in the year when it's cold out.

Thanks to Chris Andersen for the photo :-)

Another of the 4WD only entrances into Joshua Tree National Park. This one is along the Black Eagle Mine Road. However, to access this entrance you have to start driving within the park, exit the park onto BLM land, and then return the way you came.

Sunrise is my favorite time of day in Joshua Tree National Park. The Joshua Tree's 'wait' to have their portrait taken, there's (typically) no wind, it's quiet, and you can enjoy the silence.
