Explore Landscapes #4
I've been trying for a while now to get myself into the habit of writing to you, the readers of Explore Landscapes, more frequently, but more importantly, consistently.
Some of you signed up for my newsletter via my webpage - and others (more recently) have found me via Substack. I've now combined the two mailing lists into one. All future newsletters will come from Substack - so you can receive them via email and/or read them online (via the Substack app). However you choose to read them, thank you for taking the time to read Explore Landscapes. I appreciate you.
My plan is to post weekly (Thurs/Fri) and at the end of each month post a digest of that month’s posts. I welcome your feedback about what I’m writing about and what subjects you’d like me to cover.
Fall Season Workshops have started
Now that the heat of the summer months is waning (at least a little) here in Southern California, it’s time to start the fall season of workshops, both my own and also those that I teach on behalf of the Joshua Tree National Park Association (JTNPA).

I’m writing this post from a coffee shop near Joshua Tree, as I’m leading a Dark Sky Photography Workshop this evening in Joshua Tree National Park. There are still places available for the workshops on 10/13 and 10/14. This is one of a series of workshops that I’m teaching on behalf of JTNPA. Check out the awesome line up of field classes running this season.
Five Camera Settings to Learn and Practice
And, while we’re talking about workshops, here’s five camera settings that it would be good to master before attending a workshop.
As well as the more obvious camera settings (such as exposure and focus), several other camera settings come in handy when shooting landscape photography. They're not the first ones you may think of - or be familiar with - but they will help you improve your images.
In this post, I will highlight five camera settings that you should learn (and practice) before your next photography outing.
Seven Years in the Desert
I’m delighted to be showing my first exhibition, ‘Seven Years in the Desert,’ at the 29 Palms Art Gallery from Aug 31 to Sep 30, 2023. Gallery hours are Fri-Sun, 11 am - 3 pm. You’ll find the gallery at 74055 Cottonwood Drive (at National Park Drive), Twentynine Palms, CA 92277.
